Signal and Telegram have witnessed a rise of 1200% in usage before the implementation of the controversial WhatsApp privacy policy

WhatsApp is the number 1 messaging app with more than 2 billion users around the globe. But the recent report has shown some facts that could be worrying for the company that the downloads of WhatsApp from all over the world have dropped up to 43% from January to April. However, the competitors of WhatsApp are seeing a huge surge in usage before the implementation of the controversial WhatsApp privacy policy. Sensor Tower has published data in which the rivals of WhatsApp that are Telegram, and Signal, have witnessed a growth of 1200% just in the first 4 months of the year 2021 after the announcement of WhatsApp’s update.

The downloads of Signal first time have jumped up to 1,192% to 64.4 million in the first quarter of the year 2021, while the downloads of Telegram have increased up to 98% YoY to almost 161 million. The deadline for WhatsApp privacy policy is now May 15th; however, WhatsApp has changed its last deadline, which was February 8, the public indignation that came out in January has helped its two close replacements to attract new users. Both rivals of WhatsApp took great advantage of the public’s anger and took to social media platforms like Twitter to criticize WhatsApp’s privacy policy. The competitors also launched their own privacy features to gain over WhatsApp.

The new privacy policy of WhatsApp enabled its parent company Facebook to have access to the data of users of messaging app. WhatsApp wanted its users to accept this update before February 8th, but it changed the deadline to May 15th after receiving huge criticism from users across the world. WhatsApp has now planned to scrap this deadline and this update is still there, those users who do not want to accept these changes will have fewer features to use on this messaging app. Users were considering this update as an aggressive approach to the company.

Signal saw a rise in its installation by about 5,001% YoY to 50.6 million from 992,00 last year. However, the installation was declined from month to month to 7 million. After the drop in the installation, still Signal is having a consistent growth every month. Signal has a total downloads of 2.8 million just in the month of April this year a rise from 1.3 million in the same month of last year. Telegram saw a rise in its downloads up to 283% YoY to 63.5 million from just 16.6 million downloads. This app saw a drop of 3% in its downloads this year from 27 million to 26.2 million. Sensor Tower said that both competitors saw some decrease in their downloads but still, both companies are capable enough to take a great fight with WhatsApp. Sensor Tower further said that WhatsApp even saw a decline in its downloads during the pandemic situation from 76.5 million to 55.2 million in March 2020.
