Snapchat Continues Focusing on Innovation With Investment in AR Hardware

Snapchat used to be one of the hottest social media platforms out there, having thoroughly captured the younger demographic. However, over time Facebook managed to chip away at Snapchat’s influence by using Instagram, and essentially taking the features that made Snapchat so unique and giving them to Instagram.

As a result of this fact, Instagram supplanted Snapchat in many ways as the most popular social media platform for younger people, but just because Snapchat was down did not mean that it was out. Indeed, a big part of what made Snapchat so successful in the first place was its willingness to innovate, and it seems that the tech company knows that it can’t beat Facebook in terms of audience size which means that it needs to focus on innovation and breaking new ground in that territory instead.

The fact of the matter is that one thing that has set Snapchat apart from the beginning has been its focus on Augmented Reality. Each time a new AR lens is launched, people flock to Snapchat in order to download it, thereby giving the company a fighting chance time and time again.

Snapchat has now committed to providing 750,000 dollars to some of its top AR innovators, that is according to AdAge, thereby speeding up the process to the ultimate goal: creating glasses that have augmented reality capabilities.

While a lot of people tend to focus on the Snap Specs that were recently released, for the most part these glasses did not really revolutionize the wearable tech industry. However, with this renewed focus Snap Inc., which is now calling itself a camera company, is poised to change all of that by introducing glasses capable of using AR lenses, something that Mark Zuckerberg himself has said would not be possible for several years to come.
