Log in To Continue: Instagram Locks Down Platform, Prevents Lurking

Instagram is one of the most used social media app globally, but that doesn’t mean that everyone would be big on using it. Indeed, a few people might just feel like using the platform would be a waste of their time, although they might want to check out a few posts here and there since the vast quantities of content that Instagram has to offer can fulfill a wide variety of needs which makes it understandable that a lot of people would be interested in what is being offered at any given point in time.

If you didn’t have an account on Instagram, you could check out the public profiles regardless and scroll to your heart’s content. It seems like lurkers that enjoyed using features like this might no longer be given the kind of benefits that they used to receive. This is because of the fact that now when you scroll through a few posts of any Instagram user, you are going to be shown a login window. As a test you can take a peek at Digital Information World's Instagram account from any web browser.

While windows like this are not uncommon in the world of social media, this is not some window that you can navigate away from. Much on the contrary, there will be no button you can click to navigate from this, the only option would be to either sign in to an Instagram account or navigate away from the page. The only area that is currently not showing this login popups are Hashtags via search results.

It is quite understandable why Instagram is doing this. After all the platform would want people that are interested enough to check content out on Instagram to create an account on the app as well, and a force login window such as this one could potentially end up enticing a lot of people to make accounts just so that they can be done with it and check out the content they need to. Still, lurkers will miss the days when you could just check out Instagram posts without making an account.

  3. This is a discrimination against people who don't want to have an account and don't want to be in the crowd. I don't care about private accounts but the public ones should be public and for everyone. Companies will lose potential clients that way.
