Google Maps now Introduces Speedometer to Keep Check on Speed Limits

Google Maps will now let you stay within the speed limit, as the latest update is coming with a live speedometer into the app. Feature aimed at allowing you to keep a check on local speed limits can be turned on and off by going to Settings > Navigation Settings menu. When turned on, the speed limit will be shown in the bottom left corner of the screen.

The same feature was first witnessed in the Waze app that was acquired by Google in 2013. Features, like telling about incidents and crashes, police checkpoints and notifying about speed cameras, have already been introduced in the app. Google also lets users customize their navigation icon.

Not all have access to this feature and so far, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Brazil, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, India, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK, and the US have been reported to have this feature available.

Android Auto does not have this feature yet, however it is available on the Auto app.

Google while explaining about the feature on the support page said that the purpose of it is to inform only. But as GPS is not always reliable, the speedometer can also be uncertain at times. Therefore, it is better to rely on what is actually informed by the local traffic police.
