Many cloud service providers and real estate investment firms own them, and these data centers help companies carry out their digital tasks like selling to customers online, running AI tools, and in virtual collaboration settings.

In 2023, the energy consumption in US data centers was 147 TWh (Terawatt hours), which increased to 178 TWh in 2024. It is expected that the energy consumption in the US data centers will reach 224 TWh in 2025 and will jump to about 606 TWh in 2030. In 2023, the energy consumption by data centers jumped 4% of total power demand in the US and it is expected to jump 12% in 2030.
