What Brand Gets Impersonated the Most During Phishing Attacks? The Answer Might Surprise You

Phishing attacks can be a real menace because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up locking users out of their own accounts. Malicious actors who are trying to implement phishing attacks know that they will not be able to make any headway if their targets are not enticed into clicking on the malicious links. Different brands are impersonated during their attempts, but the most popular brand of all turned out to be DHL.

Check Point just released a new report that revealed that around 22% of the phishing attacks that were conducted between July and September of this year involved an impersonation of the global shipping brand. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Microsoft comes in second with 16% of the total number of attacks, and Microsoft’s social media platform LinkedIn came in third.

The case of LinkedIn is quite interesting given that it was the most impersonated brand in the first and second quarters of 2022, but in spite of the fact that this is the case it fell to third place this quarter. That might be due to an overuse of the brand that put targets on their toes and stopped them from clicking any links they ostensibly got from LinkedIn.

The professional network oriented social media platform has clearly done a good job at informing its users and mitigating future attacks. This is something that all other brands who are being impersonated must do with all things having been considered and taken into account.

DHL is a service that many people need to use in a professional capacity, and since their jobs are on the line they might not think before clicking on a link and filling out sensitive details. These employees must be educated about the dangers of phishing, especially considering that malicious actors are constantly switching things up and impersonating a wider variety of brands to make their attacks more successful than might have been the case otherwise.
