Google Maps adds carousel of shortcuts on its Android app

Google Maps for Android is now testing a carousel of search shortcuts that will be located right underneath the main lookup field. The new feature will replace the grid of eight colorful icons that were visible after swiping up the ‘Explore’ sheet. However, with this new update, the UI will always remain visible.

However, for better clarity, the icons on the carousel read "Restaurants," "Coffee," "Bars," "Events," "Hotels," "Parks," "Gas," and "…More." tapping on them immediately performs a query while the “More” features the full list of “Categories” including Food & Drink, Things to do, Shopping, and Services.

According to 9to5Google, the search giant also redesigned the pill-shaped shortcut buttons with a Material Design 2.0 aesthetic.

The new design is live on devices that are running version 10.28.2. However, they are not available on all Android – as of yet. iOS users will also have to wait for their turn on the update.
