Well to get a detailed insight of phone camera results under low light situations, DxOMark tests photos taken when light levels were between 0 lux and 20 lux. The score results for Night mode of the camera will be based on flash off, flash on and flash auto features as well. The tests performed on smartphones will be dedicated to analyzing results of phones in night mode.

Whenever a phone captures an image in low-light conditions, images get affected by issues like a flare, noise, low exposure and sometimes even low pixel quality as well. Due to low-light conditions, phone cameras fail to focus on objects and especially for phones that shoot at low shutter speeds in low-light conditions there’s a motion blur that sometimes ruins the image quality as well. So the test by DxOMark reveals the phones that can handle all these issues.

According to the results by DxOMark, Huawei P30 Pro ranked as the phone with the highest score of 59 for its camera under low-light conditions whereas Nokia 9 PureView ranked as the lowest with a score of 31.

To analyze the working of smartphones in wide mode, DxOMark will take a variety of images with the phone in landscape, cityscape, group photos, interiors, wide-angle close-up and architectures as well. The company will then test all these images with 50-1,000 lux range and also test the pictures taken between shortest focal length to its maximum focal length with an increment of 2mm for each iteration.

According to DxOMark, usually, phones fail to display color textures or details in wide-angle photos. Wide-angle phones might be displaying certain defects like blurring and distortion in images.
