Google is not holding back in showcasing its brilliance, and this time around, it’s all praise for the AI chatbot Gemini.
The tech giant shared the massive user growth for Gemini, which has hit 350 million monthly active users and 35 million daily active users. The company continues to trail behind the likes of ChatGPT and Meta AI, but with this speed, we might see it hit the top spot sooner rather than later.
Google shared the data during the remedies phase for the firm’s search antitrust legal proceedings. Despite having a slow start, Gemini has really grown in terms of user figures. However, the usage levels continue to trail behind archrivals such as ChatGPT.
When we look at late March, Gemini logged nearly 350 million monthly active users and 35 million daily active users. The company wished many would overlook its monopoly behavior and focus more on how much it has grown and positively impacted people’s lives. This is even though it was ruled as an illegal monopoly, and now it could even risk a merger.
The user data was depicted by Google during the DC federal courtroom session. Ironically, it was unveiled by the same individual who is the head of Gemini and had made great efforts to produce the chatbot.
Google’s motive behind the unveiling of the stats was to prove how it’s a force to reckon with in the world of Generative AI. It was great to see the usage quadruple in such a short timespan, but you cannot ignore the fact that it’s still well behind others like Meta and OpenAI.
Google estimated that Meta stood at 800 million while ChatGPT’s MAU was at 600 million. In January, Mark Zuckerberg shared how AI usage was on the rise, and nearly 700 million MAUs were recorded by Facebook’s parent firm.
Meta also relayed how they predicted this year to be all about highly intelligent and very personalized AI assistants. He hoped the figures would cross one billion with Meta AI leading the pack. Meanwhile, Sam Altman also shared his thoughts on the matter this month during a recent interview.
He explained how ChatGPT had 500 million weekly active users and also mentioned how the chatbot continued to grow with time. It doubled in a few weeks, and the growth was massive and quick, he continued.
Google is now attending the remedies phase of its court battle that could cause the $1.8 trillion firm to let go of its prized possession, including Chrome. The US Judge, following the case, will make the final decision after ruling on how Google violated key antitrust laws in ensuring a monopoly in the online search business.
In case the DOJ does get its way, Google might be forced to sell Chrome and put an end to the massive deals in place with Apple and more to ensure it's the default search engine across different smartphones as well as web browsers. It will also be forced to share search data with competitors.
