Adam Mosseri Declares Hashtags Useless for Reach, Recommends Audience-Focused Strategies

Most people think that hashtags are a good way to make your content visible to other people. Many influencers and creators on Instagram leverage hashtags so their content can reach as many audiences as possible and they can get their desired reach, likes and followers. But this theory got debunked when Instagram’s head said that hashtags do not work. Adam Mosseri (Instagram's Head), has also said this before that hashtags do not work in any kind meaningful way. He again answered after a question about whether hashtags work or not and his answer was a straight no.

So when he was asked about what tips he would give for people who are looking to gain more reach, Adam Mosseri said that people just need to find the overlap between what they want to get on the platform and what’s going to resonate on the platform. It just means that creators have to make interesting content that is going to be liked by the audience. The first step is to find the right audience that overlaps with your content and then you have to apply some strategies that can help you gain more reach, likes and followers.

For new creators looking to gain more engagement, it’s all about creating content that resonates with the right audience. Instead of relying on hashtags, focus on understanding what your target audience enjoys and craft content that aligns with their interests. Consistency, authentic storytelling, and experimenting with different formats like reels or carousels can help capture attention. Engage actively with your audience through comments and DMs to build a community. The key is finding that overlap between what you’re passionate about and what your audience values, which naturally drives more reach, likes, and followers.
