Twitter Just Got a New CEO, Here’s How That Changes Things

Elon Musk’s troubled tenure as Twitter chief these past few months has stirred up a lot of controversy, but it seems like it is finally coming to a close. The billionaire recently announced that he will be stepping down as Twitter CEO, and NBCUniversal’s head of advertising, Linda Yaccarino, will be taking his place.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Musk will still be serving as CTO and executive chairman at the social media platform. In spite of the fact that this is the case, Yaccarino will be forging the path forward for the company in the role of chief executive, and that means a few changes might be around the corner.

With over a decade’s worth of experiencing building NBCUniversal’s now thriving ad business, Yaccarino is well placed to meet some of Twitter’s biggest challenges. Perhaps her biggest achievement was the role she played in establishing NBC’s very own streaming service Peacock, and that might be the single most pertinent factor that led to her getting her new job.

Elon Musk has often stated that he wants to turn Twitter into a content hub rather than just a straightforward social media platform. His goal here is to compete with YouTube instead of Facebook, and noted right wing TV personality Tucker Carlson’s recent decision to start a brand new show that will be exclusively available on YouTube makes the case stronger than might have been the case otherwise.

While Carlson has not signed an official agreement with Twitter, the success of the videos he has posted thus far lend credence to the notion that Twitter might end up becoming the next big streaming sensation. We are very likely going to see a lot more content on Twitter because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up positioning it as a genuine source of news and entertainment.

Yaccarino may be the best person for the job with all things having been considered and taken into account. Peacock has managed to gain twenty million subscribers up until this point, and while that pales in comparison to Netflix, it’s still an impressive feat considering she was starting from scratch.

Musk’s frequent assertions that Twitter will replace legacy media as the primary source of news may end up being prescient. The Tesla CEO will be able to rely on Yaccarino’s insights while building up a revamped ad model for the platform, and she will be working with a much leaner work force since Elon Musk laid off as much as eighty percent of Twitter’s staff already.

It will be interesting to see how things go from here on out. Musk has long said that he did not want to be CEO of Twitter forever, and a poll he conducted on his own profile confirmed that Twitter users themselves aren’t too happy about his position either.

Linda Yaccarino’s decisions once she takes on the role will shape the trajectory of the platform for years to come. They might also have a ripple effect that may very well change the state of the social media industry in general.
