Emojis Express And Disguise Emotions In Different Contexts, New Study Claims

The invention of emojis has been a revolutionary aspect of the world of technology.

Today, so many of us use them without thinking, and it wouldn’t be wrong to mention that they’ve become an integral part of texting around the world.

A new study by scientists is going about revealing some startling findings about how emojis are getting used in today’s time. While you may have thought they end up reflecting how you feel only, that’s not the case.

This research actually shows how people are using them to disguise their feelings too, and it all depends on the situation or circumstances that they’ve been thrown in.

Today, the world of socializing has become incredibly prevalent. People are getting more and more accustomed to flaunting their feelings and judging how appropriate their communication has become. This was explained by researchers at the University of Tokyo today who were seen investigating the query inside a study that was published in a journal called Frontiers in Psychology.

A total of 1289 people were allocated for this study and all of them were a part of the most installed emoji keyboard in the country, Simeji.

The goal here was to evaluate how emojis can portray your emotions and disguise them too. And it’s true that when you come to think of it, the latter is usually not considered too much.

The literature from the past shows how people were making use of emojis as an equivalent of the type of expression seen on the outside and not really how they felt on the inside. And that can prove to be a problem. See, if the difference between the two is so huge, a sort of emotional exhaustion tends to develop.

Display rules tend to showcase more negative feelings which many feel it’s deemed to be not as appropriate for expression in real life. Usually, it’s more acceptable when you’re expressing emotions toward a person that’s close to you. And it’s also more appropriate for a certain gender to express some emotions over others.

Now the question in this research study was related to whether or not people wear their hearts on their screens or not?

The research, it showed how people continued to showcase more emotions with emojis in private chats or when dealing with close friends. So many respondents displayed a small sense of emotion toward people of higher status. And a lot of intensity with emotions arose with emojis that were matching until some people felt they had to disguise their true feelings.

For example, a lot of individuals make use of smiling emojis to hide any negativity. And they only used negative feelings when they felt very strongly about something.

Expressing such emotions using these types of emojis were linked to higher subjective well-being in comparison to hiding emotions completely.

The study really did open up a lot of people’s eyes and made them think twice about how emojis can’t be trusted all of the time, as not everyone thinks about how they’re feeling when putting them out.
