Bill Gates Hails AI As the Next Big Thing, Expresses Reservations About Web3 and the Metaverse

Many are wondering what the next big innovation in tech will end up being. For much of 2022, people held up Web3 and the Metaverse as greatest advancements that will push the world of tech to a whole new level. In spite of the fact that this is the case, Bill Gates doesn’t seem all that convinced. In a recent Reddit AMA, the tech billionaire expressed some reservations about Web3 and the Metaverse.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that he compared AI to the internet at the turn of the millennium. A reddit user asked him if he saw any tech becoming as commonplace as the internet, and Gates stated that he feels like AI fits the bill. He also expressed his doubts about Web 3 and the Metaverse, stating that he doesn’t see them becoming all that revolutionary all on their own.

The type of AI that Gates seemed most enthusiastic about was generative AI because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up showing an exponential rate of improvement. This type of AI can be used to generate content, but there is no telling what it will be capable of once it advances to the next stage.

Gates seems more focused on the applications of generative AI in the context of education, such as by tutoring children in subjects such as math. He also feels like this type of AI can be useful in providing healthcare to people in far flung locales or who do not have the money necessary to go to a doctor.

The capabilities of AI are yet to be fully explored, and it will be interesting to see what direction it ends up heading in in the near future. According to Gates, Chat GPT is just the first glimpse of all that AI can accomplished, and that just goes to show that tech can initially catch some attention before becoming orders of magnitude more complex than anyone could have expected.
