Researchers Devise New ‘Anti-Reflective’’ Coating For Reliable Wi-Fi Transmission Through Walls

Researchers have really made a unique and breakthrough discovery regarding wi-fi connectivity. And this time around, it has to do with an anti-reflective coating that enables wi-fi transmission across walls.

The news comes to us thanks to the University of Rennes and the Vienna University of Technology. Here, hardworking and talented researchers seem to have devised a new means that enables wi-fi signals to pass through walls with great accuracy.

And just the thought of it has us excited. Imagine, new developments such as this can really alter the concept linked to broadband connectivity and even the likes of 6G.

It is believed that wi-fi signals that we see today end up being reflected off of these walls or simply enter and become absorbed. This way, there is an entire limit on their total range as well as the quality of transmissions.

To counteract this, researchers claim to have created a new technique that transforms anti-reflective surfaces which are invisible to solid walls. This way, signals can effectively pass and there’s zero disruption.

So what exactly does this term ‘anti-reflective coating really mean? Well, it’s more or less similar to those surfaces you see on your pair of shades, as explained by a professor from the same institute as the researchers themselves.

When included on the surface of any pair of glasses, it enables light waves to pass in a much better manner, reducing reflection.

This is where the researchers highlighted their very successful trial where microwaves passed with ease through an obstacle maze. It was like you were replicating a complex surrounding like your home’s living room. After that, they ended up calculating matching structures with anti-reflective properties.

A similar structure with anti-reflective properties ended up being calculated in the end. This way, the reflection was removed completely.

The researchers claim that a certain type of wave must pass through mediums and in this way, they measure how waves get reflected by a particular material.

The authors added how they could brilliantly depict that and then use the facts to make calculations to produce a similar structure for any type of material. This has the ability to scatter waves in all directions and in different ways.

As a result, the addition of both mediums enables waves to pass together in the same way through the medium. They say the real success lies in the manner by which the calculations are done and for that, they were able to come up with a great method.

“We could exactly come up with calculations that belonged to the anti-reflective medium or layer”- they revealed.

For now, the authors of this particular research appear to be so content with the manner or method used to make calculations. After all, they end up producing a coating that can halt any form of reflection.

The results of the study are great and they could even impact future research and the next mobile generation for connectivity too. As it is, the research highlights how this could also impact 6G connectivity, limiting intensities for all required signals.
