Do You Share Your Netflix Account With Someone? Netflix Might Start Charging You For It

Entertainment companies like Netflix and Spotify have become a mainstay for people that want to fill their leisure time with streaming TV shows, movies as well as music. A rather common occurrence in with such platforms is that people often tend to create a single account which they then end up sharing with their friends and family members for the purposes of decreasing the amount of money they’d need to spend in total.

While this is not something that is exactly against the rules, it can decrease the potential profit that these companies can earn by limiting the number of paying customers they can obtain with all things having been considered and taken into account. It turns out that Netflix is trying to charge people around 3 dollars per month for account sharing because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up either discouraging them from doing so in the first place or at least help Netflix extract revenue from these sources.

Netflix is introducing a new feature called Add an Extra Member that lets people with accounts add up to two new profiles that can be accessed from locations other than the ones that the original account holders reside in. That will allow these individuals to get their own log in credentials, and it can go a long way towards legitimizing these kinds of uses since 3 dollars is a lot less than one would have to pay for a full account so this might actually be a good middle path for Netflix to take.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Netflix is currently testing this feature out in a few select locations like Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, and it remains to be seen when and if it will be rolled out to other countries. A recent study showed that 14% of Netflix users don’t pay for their usage, so chances are that Netflix would want to expand a feature like this one.
