WhatsApp Co-Founder to act as interim CEO of Signal until replaced

When you think about texting someone, you just pick up your phone and tap on WhatsApp because that is the most common app which people use for messaging and calling their friends over the internet. It has been the go-to app for consumers whenever they want to communicate with someone who is either living abroad or currently away from home.

In 2014 when WhatsApp was blooming and was making strides in the tech world, another app known as “Signal” came into the online messaging business where it started to create a bit of a competition. For those of you who haven’t really heard about the app, it is very similar to WhatsApp and has almost the same functionalities. You can call, text and send emojis over the internet.

While the Signal app didn’t really make an impact right away, it started to pick up its pace when the co-founder of WhatsApp Brian Acton started endorsing their team. Acton had some conflicts with executives at Facebook so he decided that it was time for him to leave the company because they wanted to make WhatsApp monetized, which was never their intention.

While the company is making strides and is getting attention around the world, the CEO of Signal Moxie Marlinspike has said that he has decided to step down as the CEO of the app. He stated in a blog post that, “As signal is growing steadily and is getting better and better every day, I think it’s time for me to step down from the CEO post”.

While stating about his plans about stepping down, he also revealed his plans about who would act as the interim CEO until his replacement is found. He named the co-founder of WhatsApp Acton as his interim replacement because, let's face it, he was the most obvious choice.

He said that, ”I am very confident about Acton and I believe that he has all the qualities to lead the team to success”. Because the app has gained such popularity around the world, he believes that a change in leadership would help them to grow and conquer even more things than they did before.

Although the app is very similar to Whatsapp, it has a few pros and cons. For instance in WhatsApp, you can create backups of your chats and even get them on some other device but you cannot do that in Signal. A pro which in our opinion makes the app stronger than WhatsApp is the security feature is a bit better than WhatsApp.

While the company has gained a new leader in the face of Acton, Marlinspike is on the interview panel interviewing candidates and is trying to find the next CEO of the company.
