Email Defenses Failed to Filter 2 Million Malicious Emails in the Past Year

Malicious emails are a really big problem because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up compromising a lot of people’s security in a really big way. Most email platforms have built in defenses that are meant to prevent malicious emails from being able to get to you. However, despite the presence of these defense systems, it appears that two million malicious emails were able to reach their intended recipients in the past year alone which is a shockingly high number if you think about it.

This information comes from research conducted by Tessian, and it does not bode well for the future of safety communication through email. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that the people that receive these emails usually get them because of the industry that they work in. For example, people that are employed by the retail industry received 49 malicious emails over the past year which is three times higher than what employees of other industries ended up receiving during the same period of time.

Malicious actors use a wide range of tactics to get through email defenses. For example, they often use display name spoofing in which they impersonate someone which makes email defenses mistakenly let their emails through. What all of this means is that the defenses that we rely on to screen emails and the like need to be beefed up to a great extent, otherwise it does not seem all that likely that these industries will be able to continue staving off malicious actors in the future. This becomes even more important when you realize that the rate at which these attacks are occurring are going up which means it won’t be long before defenses are completely overwhelmed.
