Data Reveals The Average Salaries TikTok Pays Its US-based Employees Ranges From $50,000 To $300,000 Per Year

This year, the popular video-sharing platform, TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance have been on a hiring spree even as TikTok has faced threats of a ban by President Trump. In 2020, TikTok more than doubled its global employee headcount, and the company also plans to hire 10,000 employees in the United States over the upcoming three years. Furthermore, the wage data from the United States DOL (Department of Labor) suggests that many of the company’s new hires in the United States are being offered six-figures salaries.

Earlier this year, Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm, reported that the TikTok app has passed 2 billion downloads worldwide. However, the company is also facing intense scrutiny from US government. India has already banned the app, and the Trump administration has threatened to ban TikTok if it is not acquired by a US company.

A company’s representative told media outlets that the United States team of TikTok has tripled since the start of this year. The spokesperson also added, the social media app is proud to be creating over 10,000 jobs across the United States. Several recent hires of ByteDance and TikTok have focused on engineering, research, software, and product management work.

Business Insider analyzed the Q3 2020 disclosure data of the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification for temporary and permanent foreign employees to better understand how much TikTok pays US employees. Salary offers from ByteDance and TikTok from nearly 240 foreign-worker certification applications are included in the data, and those applications were submitted and certified from Oct 2019 to June of this year.

According to the data, average salary of workers in product and engineering roles ranges from 5 to 6 figure numbers each year, spanning positions such as software engineer ($89,900 to 280,000), Data Engineer ($145,000 to $256,800), Product/US Designer ( $120,000 to $180,000), Senior Backend Software Engineer ($195,000 to $240,000), and Senior Software Engineer ($160,000 to $264,000). On the other hand, TikTok and its parent company ByteDance offered temporary and permanent (H1-B) employees in research and data-science roles salaries ranging from $125,000 to $300,000 each year, spanning positions such as Data Scientist ($128,000 to $200,000), Senior Data Analyst ($125,000 to $160,000), Senior Data Scientist ($228,000), Principal Research Scientist ($300,000), and Research Scientist ($138,000 to $200,000).

The average salary of employees in monetization-focused roles ranges from $51,000 to $252,000 per year, while overall, the companies offered permanent and temporary workers base salaries from $49,920 to $300,000 per year.
