In the contest to offer the best smartphone device in the world, it seems that the only competition Apple has nowadays is Apple itself since Apple’s iPhone 11 surpassed iPhone XR to become the most popular smartphone in the world during the first half of this year. Recently, Omdia published new data for the mobile market in the first half of 2020, and according to this data, the most popular smartphone model is iPhone 11.
The company sold 37.7 million iPhone 11 units during the first six months of this year. In comparison, iPhone XR took the leading spot in the previous year, and the company sold 26.9 million units of iPhone XR. Despite the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the mobile market and consumer demand, Apple managed to sell more units of iPhone 11. Interestingly, the company had shipped 19.5 million units of iPhone 11 during the first quarter of this year, which the company sold 6 million units of iPhone XR during the first quarter of 2019.
Director of smartphone research at Omdia, Jusy Hong, stated that Apple has taken either the first rank or second rank in the global model shipment ranking of Omdia for more than five years. Hong added that the success of Apple is the result of the company’s strategy to offer relatively few models which allows it to focus its efforts on a small number of products. These products appeal to a broad selection of customers and sell in high volumes.
Samsung Galaxy A51 was the second-most popular smartphone model during the first half of this year. Samsung took the runner-up spot in 2019 as well as in 2020, and 11.4 million units of Samsung Galaxy A51 were sold during the first six months of this year. In comparison, Samsung sold 13.4 million units of Galaxy S10 during the first six months of 2019.
It is worth noting that iPhone 11 is not the only Apple mobile in the top 10 smartphones as Apple iPhone SE was ranked fifth in this list, and the company sold 8.7 million units of iPhone SE. Apple shipped 8 million units of iPhone XR, and 7.7 million units of iPhone 11 Pro Max, and lastly, iPhone 11 Pro was ranked 10 in the charts. Apple sold 6.7 million units if iPhone 11 Pro during the period and the company is now getting ready to launch new-generation iPhones this fall.
