Reddit unveils Anonymous Browser to the mobile application and it is only available for Android for now

The internet has a lot of dark alleys and sometimes people accidentally or, intentionally, end up there but they do not always want their activities to be known to others; and while many websites allow for anonymous browsing, some traces of the users’ activities always remain in either the browser settings or somewhere inside the computer and this can be a serious problem for some.

Reddit is one of the most used social media platform where content like news accumulation, entertainment, and discussions fly well under related Subreddits. Reddit is a moderated platform, with moderators assigned to each subreddit, usually, the people who create them, to filter out content, and prevent spam filling up the subreddit. Users get points known as Karma for posting and commenting on the platform and interacting with the community.

Anonymous web browsing means that the user’s personal identifying information is hidden by the utilization of the World Wide Web. Anonymity can be obtained through various proxy servers, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that basically change the users’ virtual location and lets them hide their personal information, and other programs such as Tor (A browser which hides the user’s IP address and their identifiable information from others).

Anonymous browsing is not used only for hiding shady activities but has a few practical uses too. For example, it was shown that airline ticket prices increased for one user when they visited the website multiple times, and using anonymous browsing was able to prevent that from happening.

Reddit also had an Anonymous mode, but it was not as effective as the new “Anonymous Browsing” that has now been added. Reddit has finally decided to follow in the footsteps of Google and has updated the way its anonymous browsing mode worked. Now, when a user uses the Anonymous Browsing feature it creates a unique session ID that is like a guest account, this guarantees that there is no connection between the user and their anonymous searches.

As with the previous anonymous browsing mode, the default subreddits will be available to the user but they will also have the option to go anywhere they want, however, because, of the fact that a unique session ID is created none of the search data will feed into ads or suggestions or personalized notifications.

This feature is also useful to allow users to safely explore new interests, topics, or hobbies without having them pop up onto their main feed saving users a lot of annoyance.

Users can switch to Anonymous Browsing mode and back to their main accounts seamlessly at any time. The app will also end the Anonymous Browsing session automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity.

For now, this feature is only available on Android operating systems and will be made available to iOS devices at a later unannounced date.
