App Annie's Latest Report Shows A 20 Percent Increased Time Spent On Apps By The Users Amid The Coronavirus

It is of no surprise that people will be spending more time using their Android or iOS apps during these coronavirus forced lockdowns across the globe. The masses are using these apps to connect to their loved ones or to kill time while being bored out as we are locked in our houses.

App Annie released its report for the first quarter of 2020 in which it showed how much time people are spending on apps. There was a rise of 20% in the time being spent on Android devices by users from the previous year. We can clearly see from the report that users are spending 15% and 5% more time on iOS and Android apps respectively. There was in-app spending of $23.4 billion for the first quarter of 2020 across the globe which is a new record.



According to the report, users from Italy spent 30% more time on apps compared to the last quarter of 2019. Similarly, France has seen a growth of 15% while users from both the countries- the United States and Germany spent 10% more time on apps. App Annie expects to see further growth in this aspect while the governments are taking more strong initiatives to make people stay at homes.


The report also says that all of the social media platforms are experiencing more users’ engagement which shows that people are trying to revive their social life during the quarantine. Discussing the performance of some specific apps, TikTok remains on top in terms of download. A similar app Likee is also prominent holding its position in the top 10 downloaded applications. Likee is seen focusing on western countries during the year 2020.

TikTok’s 91% of the total revenue for February was the result of its Chinese sister app’s Douyin spending. This has helped the app to become popular among users. Douyin’s most revenue is due to its eCommerce integrations. TikTok has not started to work eCommerce thing yet but we expect the platform to do so in the coming few months.



People are using video calling apps to connect to their loved ones while some are using these apps for conducting online classes etc. This increased demand helped the Zoom app to become top-ranked in the business category of iOS apps among 141 markets. The report recorded 735 times increase in the Houseparty app’s downloads during the last week of March. Other social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have also upgraded their various video features under this surged demand of video calling tools.
