TikTok Was the Most Downloaded App in the First Month of 2020 Surpassing Whatsapp

Most of the time when you think about popular social networks you are going to think about apps that have a traditionally western approach to doing things because of the fact that they most likely originate in America. However, in recent times Chinese apps have started to hold their own in the market as well, and the fact of the matter is that TikTok is an app that has particularly made waves particularly when you consider the fact that it has tapped a market that American tech companies have often struggled to penetrate, namely India as well as other countries that have large populations that are currently becoming more and more likely to own a smartphone.

If you look at the rise in popularity that TikTok is experienced, the numbers seem to indicate a rise that is positively meteoric. Last year the most downloaded app in the world was WhatsApp which makes sense due to that apps more or less universal appeal, but the fact of the matter is that the second most downloaded app, Facebook, slid into third place last year due to TikTok’s rise to glory.

In the first month of 2020, TikTok managed to supersede WhatsApp as the most downloaded app in the world, that's according to data collected by SensorTower. This indicates a shift in the tech industry. Just two years back, Facebook was the single biggest social media company in the world. It held the top two spots as far as app downloads were concerned. Then last year, TikTok beat Facebook and this year it has officially beaten Facebook’s trump card WhatsApp indicating that Facebook might just need to start taking the threat that this app presents a great deal more seriously. It will be interesting to see the growth that TikTok continues to experience as well as how Facebook will react to this growth moving forward.
