The New Batteries Introduced by IBM Research are outperforming Lithium-ion Batteries

According to the announcements by IBM Research, it created a new battery design that is aimed to bring comfort for its users by reducing unnecessary use of heavy metals and with this, these batteries will be outperforming the traditional batteries with lithium-ions on multiple fronts.

As per the IBM Research, the newly designed battery could totally minimize the need to mine as it is built with materials extracted directly from seawater.

The battery created by IBM uses a nickel-free and cobalt cathode material mixed with a safe liquid electrolyte along with a very high flash point.

This type of combination of such materials helps the company to reduce flammability in the batteries as it suppresses the dendrites of lithium metal while charging.

Along with the launch of these newly designed batteries, IBM Research also signed joint development agreements with Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America’ Central Glass, a supplier of battery electrolyte and manufacturer of batteries named Sidus.

There are so many interesting features about the IBM Research’s new battery design but let’s discuss the major feature that makes these batteries outperform others:

· As the IBM Research batteries use less metal which means it will be costing less as compared to others.

· Without the use of nickel and cobalt type heavy metals, the newly designed batteries by IBM Research will have more power, charging time, flammability and more efficiency as compared to batteries with heavy metals in it.

According to the IBM Research, these newly designed batteries could charge to more than 80% and all less than 5 minutes, which means that these new batteries without sourcing issues could be applied to more markets and use cases as compared to other batteries because these will give more efficient results as compared to lithium-ion batteries.

The batteries by IBM Research are expected to be used in electric vehicles, electric aircraft, power grids and also in flying vehicles in the future.

According to the research by IBM, some key benefits of these newly designed batteries would be:

· These batteries exceed the technology of lithium-ion by offering more than 10,000 W/L power density to its users.

· In comparison with lithium-ion batteries, these new batteries top the feature of energy density by offering 800 Wh/L.

· After comparing the efficiency of Lithium-ion and IBM Research batteries, the IBM Research batteries display more than 90% energy efficiency as compared batteries with lithium-ion.

· The lack of heavy metals in the battery makes it cost less as compared to lithium-ion batteries.

· The IBM Research batteries can charge more than 80% in less than 5 minutes.

IBM Research also explained that it is using techniques of Artificial Intelligence to detect the new and safer materials in order to advance the performance of its batteries.
