Tumblr introduces group chats for its mobile users

It looks like Automattic is trying to improve its recently acquired social network, Tumblr is rolling out group chats for mobile users. The social media platform announced the launch in a blog post where they said that the feature would be slowly available to all the users.

To access the feature, users simply have to tap the group chat icon, located in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen. Tapping on the icon will show the list of groups the user has joined, created, or has invitations for. The same can also be accessed by swiping left from the main screen.

Users who wish to create a group chat just have to tap on the plus sign icon, located in the top-right corner of the group chat page. From here, they can name their group, add a picture, and customize their group with colors and tags.

The users are also allowed to admin up to five groups simultaneously. However, there is no limit to the number of groups they participate in.

When it comes to privacy, the group admin is the only one who can invite other participants in the group. Admins can invite up to 100 participants in one group.

However, the messages are open to the public and can be viewed by anyone on Tumblr. They are also deleted within 24 hours and once the user sends a message in the group – there is no way to edit them.

According to Tumblr, the group chats will be moderated and monitored by the company employees and any type of violation, use of hate speech and harassment of any sort will be strictly prohibited.

The company says that the groups are the responsibility of the owners or the admins and it is up to them to make their space friendly and welcoming. In fact, the owners of the group have full liability to remove any participant or message that they find unfit for the group. Removing any member from the group will also ban them permanently from the specific group chat.

Since the chats are publicly available to the other users of Tumblr, the company allows everyone to report the violations – whether or not they are part of the group.
