Google Update Reveals YouTube Video Highlights in Search Results

A recent update to Google’s search engine has changed the way we see videos in our search results. Whereas previously you would basically get a list of videos without any real context regarding why they were relevant to your search query apart from perhaps the titles that the video’s uploaders had given the content.

The update will now make it so that relevant parts of the videos will be highlighted so that if you are pressed for time you would be able to skip ahead to the parts that actually have something to do with what you are searching for. Since a lot of videos that ostensibly have a lot to do with your search query often have quite a bit of fluff in them that is more or less irrelevant, this new feature is probably going to help people save quite a bit of time which is very important considering the breakneck pace at which our modern world operates.

According to Google Search’s product manager Prashant Baheti, text based content often got increased attention from regular search results because of the fact that text is easier to skim through and find something that you are actually interested in. Video based content would only get that level of scrutiny if the user in question was specifically searching for videos in the first place. In order to democratize search results and make it easier for people to gain information of videos as well, the algorithm has been tweaked a little bit.
"Starting today you can find key moments within videos and get to the information you’re looking for faster, with help from content creators. When you search for things like how-to videos that have multiple steps, or long videos like speeches or a documentary, Search will provide links to key moments within the video, based on timestamps provided by content creators.", explained Google in a blog post. Adding further, "You’ll be able to easily scan to see whether a video has what you’re looking for, and find the relevant section of the content. For people who use screen readers, this change also makes video content more accessible."
Content creators play a role in these search results. They will basically have to use specific bookmarks on their videos, something that will actually allow them to get more traffic to their content although their will be the chances of content creators misusing these bookmarks in order to maximize traffic which Google is going to have to try and deal with during the initial phases of this new type of search result.
