The never-ending struggles between Facebook and fake news

Facebook is one of the most used social media platforms in the world. Different people have different variety of interests and the core focus of Facebook is to provide unique services to ease its users.

People use social networks as a getaway thing, they use various apps to forget about the daily struggles for a while. Over the past years, Facebook faced a lot of controversies due to the spread of fake information over the internet. Various people spread fake information to misguide people or to create chaos in the surrounding.

How rumors are detected

A month before the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a rumor spread on Facebook. People started sharing about a viral gimmick familiar to email spammers: “Copy and paste this message to all your friends, or else Facebook will share your private information”. This hoax started particularly in the U.S. and the Philippines.


Inside Facebook, California, headquarters, a small group of people watched this rumor gain traction by using a special software program they called Stormchaser. The tool was specially designed to track hoaxes, silly jokes and often untrue viral misconceptions, particular about Facebook-owned apps.

Use of Stormchaser

Since 2016, Facebook employees have used Stormchaser to track various viral posts, including a popular conspiracy that the company listens to users through their phone’s microphone according to their three former employees.

Stormchaser is one of the several tools that Facebook uses to manage its reputation after all the controversies over the past years.

Facebook used this tool only to detect posts about Facebook based on keywords, and to respond according to the situation.

Companies monitor social media to get feedback

We live in a digital world where almost everyone prefers social media for all sorts of purposes. Different companies use social media to learn about the customer response to their products. Facebook is unique in a way that it owns the platform that its watching, this advantage helps Facebook to track and reach users more effectively.

Facebook tries all the ways possible to create a good impact on its users

After various controversies, Facebook hires hundreds of public relations official to create a better image of the company. They collect survey data on a frequent basis to understand how the general public views them. The internal efforts of Facebook which haven’t been reported that much includes a program dubbed Night’s Watch, after HBO’s Game of Thrones, The Facebook staff monitors how the news coverage of Facebook spread on social network and apps such as WhatsApp. Although the content is encrypted on WhatsApp but Facebook could get a sense of what went viral on the app by looking at how people mentioned information from WhatsApp when they posted to Facebook.

Use of polls to measure top leaders

Different companies use polls to measure how different top leaders are perceived according to a variety of people. During the 2016 elections, the data collected was also used to determine where Zuckerberg and Sandberg stand in front of others. In June 2017, Zuckerberg was considered as the “mature”, “honest” and “passionate” CEO. He scored the highest “innovative” and lowest on “shares my values”


Zuckerberg’s commencement address at Harward University in May 2017 was rated more “inspiring” than his F8 conference earlier that year, reported Bloomberg.

A particular issue arises when Zuckerberg found his face appeared in a presentation with a label “Historic Innovation”. The concept that he was not a current innovator anymore made a lot of controversies because Facebook is a platform for its creativity to recruit software coders and to sustain company morale.

Facebook executives went on stage at their annual developer conference to announce about tech that could transfer a person’s thoughts into texts on Screen. In summer 2017, Facebook copied some features of Snapchat by introducing short stories, etc.
