Meta’s Copycat Strategy Might Hurt The Company As Legal Battle with FTC Heats Up

For years, tech giant Meta has been famous for purchasing or creating copycat platforms and features. These might seem all great at the start, but they do end up failing and shuttering in a short number of years.

However, we cannot ignore the fact that two of its platforms have attained massive success after coming under Meta’s wings. This includes both Instagram and WhatsApp. Now that does come at the cost of a new antitrust battle with the FTC, which accuses the company of wiping out competition to flourish. The end result might not go in Meta’s favor, leading to a merger.

Regulators are concerned that most of the decisions that Facebook’s parent firm makes are certainly anti-competitive. Now, Meta continues to argue that its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp were not created to impact smaller competition but actually assist it in getting bigger and better. They hoped to make the apps more relevant to the user market as the world of social media continued to evolve. Today, Instagram has more than 2 billion active users, which says so much.

The trial began on Monday, and Zuckerberg has testified twice in court in Washington. The FTC pressured Meta to explain why the CEO chose to send an email that proved that it was only interested in adopting Instagram’s photo features, but also to stop it from moving ahead of Meta. Remember, this all happened during a period when Meta was struggling with a transition or jump to mobile from the usual desktop.

Zuckerberg’s main defense strategy is linked to stating that Meta had to evolve and to stay more relevant; it needed to take on better features. After all, the competition is mega. Meta shared further how the world keeps forgetting that Meta continues to face mega competition from YouTube and TikTok, which take up a majority of the social media market share.

Meta also defends itself by claiming both deals were accepted and approved by the FTC at the time, which means they also failed to see eye to eye with the accusations being made right now. Now, when we look at the bigger picture, there’s no doubt about the fact that Meta really did help both platforms remain active and competent in the last ten years.

The latest stats prove how Instagram could make up more than 50% of the company’s total revenue in the US in 2025, which is a major milestone of success. Meanwhile, popular texting app WhatsApp is getting more users by the second. It might not be getting the best revenue today, but it’s really predicted to help Meta with expansion plans.

It’s interesting to see how the US government isn’t intervening, despite Zuckerberg’s efforts to try and smooth things over with President Trump and his administration. He does hope it can be better for Big Tech, but again, this case is testimony to that. We’ll just need to wait and watch.
