Social media giant X just shared its second transparency report that highlighted all the necessary actions it took during the second part of 2024. The company says these are based on the violations of its policies, requests made by the government, and so on.
While the platform did ensure major progress was made to combat spam, some additional points were worth a mention.
For starters, X gave a summarized view of all the enforcement actions it took between July and December of last year, including rule violations. X shared getting rid of over 1.16M less posts related to abuse and harassment during the second half of 2024. This was a major drop from the 43% seen in the previous report. Interestingly, there were nearly 164,000 fewer account suspensions in a similar time frame.
That appears to be a major shift in its approach with the app giving greater space for such reports while there’s a huge fall in posts deleted due to exploitation of children. The decline outlined was 80% versus a smaller decline in account suspension for the same period.
Child safety happens to be a major focus for Musk and Co, and it was a serious point to mention how Elon Musk ended up taking over the platform. Such a major decline in removals can suggest two things. Either accounts are posting that kind of material less often or previous efforts of the app to combat such issues are now taking effect. It can also indicate that X is not doing enough to remove material now as it was before.
Both ways, the app is suspending more accounts than what Twitter used to be doing. Back in the year 2022, we saw Twitter’s last transparency report talk about suspending 696K profiles for child exploitation. Now despite the fall in account suspension rates right now, X appears to operate at nearly double this rate.
Another point worth mentioning is how it’s also suspending far fewer accounts for hate speech than was seen in the past. As per Musk, he feels this is important as it signals freedom of speech and not a reach initiative. This has been the tech mogul’s slogan from the start.
As far as legal requests are concerned, X got 97k legal action requests during the first six months of 2024 and it was in compliance with 82% of those. The countries requesting such matters are clearly not surprising to X, and they conclude South Korea, the EU, Japan, and Turkey.
Now, seeing Musk’s closeness with President Trump and his entry into politics has many wondering if X would be functioning any differently than before as some fear biasness with accounts and countries considered allies to the US. For that, we can only hope Musk works sincerely as X is a social media giant catering to millions. The key difference will lie in striking the right balance.
