President Trump has hinted towards a possible extension in the deadline given to TikTok to avoid a potential ban in the US.
At first, the popular social media platform was only given 75 days before another ban would be enforced but Trump says that won’t be necessary. The news comes after he was asked to comment in the Oval Office about the platform’s undecided fate.
Many Americans are hoping for a deal that will allow them to continue using the app without fear. Trump has also given the platform some credit for helping him gain votes during the 2024 US Presidential elections, making it clear he’s still got a warm spot for the app.
The platforms have been in the air for a while now, even since a law required the Chinese-based company to divest ownership or face a ban. That is when Trump shared that 75 days would be enough to make such a decision.
Now, since the deadline seems to be coming close, he reassured that the app had plenty of time to make the decision and how it might be extended if needed. It’s not clear if he did reference 90 days more as different media outlets had divided views on the subject.
Trump also made it clear that many people were keen on acquiring ownership and the company’s fate did change after he was re-elected for a second term. According to him, the app works on fairgrounds and is very entertaining for the youth.
The US Head of State did hope China’s president would agree on the sale of the platform to an American buyer as it would be in the nation’s best interest. He didn’t give more details on the deal but said he would surely make it worthwhile for this investment to take center stage.
Today, we did get the confirmation that both Apple and Google restored TikTok on their app stores. But despite that, many had found a makeshift means to sidestep the government’s ban. The platform is working hard to promote this kind of loophole too, experts confirmed.
Many sideloading apps such as Signulous saw spikes in users since the removal of TikTok from app stores in January this year. The practice gives people the chance to circumvent the ban by enrolling as developer accounts. This puts a wide array of security risks on offer where platforms such as Signulous benefit via annual fees to get the job done.
So far, stats shows that 120k people used the app to access TikTok in the US. While Trump tried to put out a deal to divest the app, both Google and Apple were worried about being penalized for offering the platform on their app stores.
Therefore, Signulous benefited this whole time with thousands of downloads each hour and sideloading the TikTok app into American devices. TikTok is well aware of what’s going on and it’s motivating users to use this track and others to make the app work in the US.
Now the question is that since everything is so public now, America could soon get after sideloading apps and ban them in the country. It might be similar to the crackdown we’ve witnessed against ad-blockers.
But then we also witnessed platform levels of resistance towards ad blockers that showed why federal action against these sideloaders might not be sticking along for too long. TikTok fans will find some means to use the app, be it through VPNs or Third Parties.
