According to an analysis conducted by ReliaQuest, hackers are getting advanced and now they can hack you in just 48 minutes. Experts are always telling consumers to update their systems, because of vulnerabilities found in Chrome Web Browser and Nvidia GPU drivers, and now that hackers are getting quicker, it is more crucial to adopt the "update now" mentality. As compared to 2023, the breakout time for hackers to hack into a system has reduced 22% in 2024. The fastest time it took for hackers to access a system and do lateral movement was 27 minutes. As the break out timing for hackers is decreasing, organizations are also not getting enough time to respond or stop the attack.
It is important to make automated defenses if organizations need to control hacking. There are some factors which are helping hackers attack systems like access brokers capitalising on the surge in information-stealing malware which provides hackers quick ways to launch their attack and attackers adopting more specialized strategies to accelerate their attacks. Some hackers are also using AI to speed up penetration test tools which help them in finding vulnerabilities in systems.
The analysis by ReliaQuest also showed that break out time for an attack is most important for hacking and it can have serious consequences like ransomware deployment, data exfiltration, reputational damage and data loss. It was also found that it takes 18 days for a hacker to attack from the discovery of a vulnerability, which is a 62% decrease from 2023 when it used to take 47 days on average.
