Instagram Engagement Declines? Mosseri Offers Insights, but Creators Disagree

If you’re a content creator who has recently noticed a decline in reach, you might want to read on further.

The issue of shadow-banning has plagued Instagram in recent times and calls for better insights into the matter are on the rise amongst the creator community. This is why Instagram head Adam Mosseri was quick to share a video speaking more on the matter in detail.

Shadow banning refers to an issue about how users feel when content does not get the reach that it deserves or once had in the past. Many firmly feel that the app is disguising their posts without alerting them or for no good reason. But as per Mosseri, that’s not really the case.

He explained how Instagram doesn’t actually limit the creator’s reach to followers. If the engagement does fall, it’s more related to the audience’s reaction and not the content being hidden. At the same time, it might arise due to shifts in the algorithm or the overall performance of the content.

The Instagram app doesn’t limit reach inside recommendations. If the account is not recommendable, the posts will not show up in locations such as the Reels or the Explore Tab. Mosseri also provided some tips for creators in terms of why the app is limiting reach.

For starters, he mentioned that Instagram has a total of two kinds of ranking systems. The first one is Connected Ranking and the second one is Recommendations. The former is more related to content that followers can see so no reach gets restricted here. The latter is the content shown to non-followers so that is where the app might restrict reach.

What are some reasons that the app might not add your content in recommendations? Well, a drop in reach could be linked to the app’s recommendation violations. Some common problems include content getting flagged for violations inside community guidelines. It might have to do with hate, misinformation, or explicit content. Secondly, it might be linked to videos with watermarks from other apps like TikTok that could be restricted. Then you’ve got content on repeat that is of poor quality or misleading in nature. And last but not least, it has to do with engagement issues that might make it feel like spam. For instance, giving out too many giveaways or perhaps comment baiting.

If your account does get impacted, you can simply head on over to the Account Status inside settings to witness if your content meets eligibility recommendations.

Mosseri says that users can better reach by checking their account status. Simply click on settings and see if the app flagged any problems linked to the content. Next, you can analyze to see your insights. See the rates of likes, shares, and views. Are people really seeing the reel until the end, are they engaging with it, and are they passing it on to others are simple things to be mindful of.
Whatever is working, double down on it and if it’s not, remove it, Mosseri added. Also, be up to date with the app’s recommendable guidelines. You have to make sure that the material follows the best practices and delete any watermark, avoid misinformation, and focus more on posts of high quality. Don’t forget to experiment with newer materials as what may have worked yesterday might not perform the same today due to changing trends.

Also, it never hurts to follow the newest trends, formats, and tactics for engagement. You need to keep your audience engaged until the very end. As Mosseri says, Instagram does not want to limit its reach. It wants creators’ content to reach the maximum audience because that is what benefits the company.

Despite Adam Mosseri’s reassurance, the majority of comments failed to agree with what he had to say. Most users started to counter-question his stance and tips used for better engagement. Another mentioned that nothing but a bunch of lies were published here and as you can tell, creators are not happy. The consensus is that Instagram suppresses content for its benefit with Mosseri overcomplicating matters more than what they already are. What do you think?
