ByteDance CEO Says Company Lagging Behind in the AI Race

Liang Rubo, CEO of ByteDance which is the parent company of TikTok, has issued a warning stating that the company is being too slow in its adoption of AI, pointing to GPT-1 being launched back in 2018. In spite of the fact that this is the case, TikTok didn’t start looking into generative AI until the middle of 2023, and that might end up making the platform stagnate at this current point in time.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Liang issued these statements at a meeting in Singapore. He stated that his company isn’t all that great at spotting new up and coming tech, and this might end up making future growth a lot harder than might have been the case otherwise.

Currently, Google and Microsoft have already launched their own AI models, and that is largely due to them being early adopters of the tech. While ByteDance has conducted some experiments with AI based chatbots, including Cici and ChitChop for foreign markets as well as Doubao at home, Liang is of the opinion that it still needs to make up for lost time.

One of the things that make TikTok stand out as a social media platform is its algorithm because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up keeping users coming back for more. Hence, this might be an essential area to incorporate AI into, so it will be interesting to see where things go from here on out.
It bears mentioning that ByteDance is by no means the only company that was surprised by OpenAI’s sudden rise to the top. ChatGPT became so popular in such a short duration of time that Google was compelled to speed up the timeline for its own AI based chatbot. Several months later, this chatbot is still being referred to as an experiment, so there might still be a fair amount of time for ByteDance to play catch up and get on par with some of its competitors in America.
