With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that the White House is attempting to crack down on this as much as possible.
In spite of the fact that this is the case, the onus is still on tech companies to voluntarily agree to data anonymization among other things. The main issue here is that tech companies offering smart devices for homes can often charge a premium rate for the security label, which may make this level of protection less accessible than might have been the case otherwise.
There is a clear demand for it as well, with a recent survey revealing that many consumers in the US don’t see a problem in paying a little extra as long as it gives them the level of privacy that they desire. This might give them the ability to see which devices are secure prior to buying them, but there will still be many consumers who are unable to ascertain such things at a glance.
Most estimates state that there are approximately 20 internet connected devices in an average American household. This exponentially increases the dangers of cyber attacks. Governments must do more than just offer bandaid solutions, they must create comprehensive guidelines that are mandatory for corporations to follow.
The current attempts to make smart devices safer may be a step in the right direction, but more work must be done in order to leave consumers secure. The present model may not be sustainable in the long run.
