Over Half of 2022 Gaming Revenue to Come From Hypercasual Game Apps

Gaming has been a very serious pastime for the people that partake in it, and that has turned the videogame industry into one of the most profitable in the world. While most gamers have some strong opinions about the concept of mobile gaming because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up going against their philosophy that gaming is an inherently skill based hobby, hypercasual mobile games have become big money earners for developers.

It is projected that over half of total gaming revenue in 2022, or 51% to be precise, will come from hypercasual gamers that are playing on their smartphones. These apps are characterized as usually being free to play, requiring very short learning curves and best used in short bursts rather than extended gaming sessions. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that hyper casual games have gone from comprising 14 of the most downloaded apps on the App Store and Google Play in 2018 to 36 in 2022.

That is an increase of 157%, and it suggests that many more developers will be focusing on this segment moving forward. What’s likely is that the standard gaming market has been saturated, but hyper casual games are able to target a type of consumer that might not have been interested in more serious gaming. With revenue projections estimating well over $100 billion this year, we might even see more gaming developers moving towards casual versions of their popular gaming products.

The rise of hyper casual games can be said to have originated with the release of Flappy Bird. This notorious game minted millions for its developer who famously took the app offline because he felt like it was too addictive. Indeed, that was a sign of things to come because people are definitely addicted to gaming apps like this, so much so that this type of game is earning five times more than the most popular serious game genre of RPGs which are only expected to bring in around $20 billion.
