The Key to Succeeding in Cybersecurity (infographic)

Cybersecurity is one of the most in demand fields in the world because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up ensuring that a company can remain secure from the various threats that exist out there. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that while there are definitely quite a few jobs that you can look into in this field, it’s still quite a challenge to make yourself seem hirable by showing your potential employer that you have what it takes.

Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) conducted a survey of just under 500 professionals working in the field of cybersecurity has revealed some insights that these industry insiders would like to give to people that aspire to work in their field. The first tip that they have given involves attempting to create a network of professionals. If you tend to interact with a lot of IT professionals and the like, you would be far more likely to find out about potential openings in your field of expertise.

This network can also provide you guidance with regards to how you can go about applying for these types of roles. Now, the network that you build is all well and good, but it won’t be of much use if you do not have the kinds of certifications that are required for the purposes of making you capable of doing these kinds of jobs in the first place.

If you get the requisite certifications, you would be solidly positioned to apply for any and all kinds of roles pretty much as soon as they open up. However you should be wary of overdoing it in this regard. There are all kinds of really obscure certifications available, and while getting these certifications certainly won’t hurt your chances their potential benefit is minimal to say the least. Hence, you would pretty much just be wasting your time if you were to get them, so you should instead focus on the few certifications that will get you the most mileage.

Getting your CISSP (Certified Information System Security Professional) is the single most important thing for you to end up doing in this regard. Over half of the nearly 500 or so experts that responded to this survey said that this certification was the most important one that they could have ever gotten. It should also be noted that over half of respondents, 52% to be exact, said that the kind of experience you had might just be a bigger factor in helping you land the job you have always wanted.

What this means is that if you want to find some of the best cyber security jobs that the market currently has to offer, you need to start off by getting CISSP or some other widely accepted and desired certification. After this you should slowly start to acquire experience and build out your network, after which you would get the chance to find jobs that you can apply for.

One should always remember that this will be a long and probably really grueling process. It takes a long time to get to the top, and you should be willing to work extremely hard to get there.
