In a recent interview with CNBC, the Instagram chief defended Facebook’s response to the US presidential election that recently occurred. Mosseri referred to the complexity of the issues that are being faced, and also noted that there is no perfect solution to the problems that surround major social media platforms during the election. Whether or not people would be convinced remains to be seen, though they are likely to take this as a subordinate CEO pandering to his boss and might not take Mosseri’s defense of Facebook all that seriously.
Some more relevant things that Mosseri discussed had to do with the future of Instagram, particularly an upcoming redesign that might change Instagram’s overall approach. Instagram will start focusing more on two specific areas: Reels and shopping. Reels is a natural byproduct of TikTok’s success, being both Instagram as well as Facebook’s attempt to remain competitive in the face of a formidable new opponent. Reels has proven to be moderately successful, and Mosseri has decided to start cashing in on this success by adding ads to Reels. This might not go down well with most users, but it is an accepted part of how free internet services work which means that it was going to happen sooner or later.
Perhaps more interesting is the focus on ecommerce. Mosseri stated that ecommerce won’t just generate revenue, it will make ads more relevant as well. This shows that Instagram might see drastic changes occurring in the near future.
