Chart: TikTok Conquers the Global Market in Lockdown

With a majority of the world’s population ‘homebound’ during the lockdowns to contain the spread of coronavirus – TikTok ultimately became a savior. The social media platform not only allowed consumers to share creative content but also provided them with lighthearted videos to calm the apprehension that surrounded almost everyone during these testing times.

Interestingly, the app garnered ‘unanticipated’ recognition outside China during the first half of 2020. Before corona-virus, the app was effectively growing its user base mainly in India and China. However, the recent months saw it rising to a new level – outside its staple regions.

In fact, GWI research shows that the Chinese-based app saw a 72% increase in monthly visitation on a global level between Q3 2019 and Q2 2020.

Moreover, Latin America saw the most impressive numbers with a growth of 185%. The consumers located in North America and Europe residents also became keen with the short-video sharing platform and reached a growth of +123% and +93% respectively.

TikTok was popular in other regions of the world including Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Africa as well.

Launched in 2016, the video-sharing app is currently competing with some of the biggest players in the market. It also serves a different purpose than other leading social networks – that adds to its desirability. It is available in more than 150 countries.

Recently, a few countries including India – TikTok’s primary market announced to ban this app. According to an official statement by India, Chinese-made apps possessed a threat to their country. Some other countries are expressing their concerns over this app for showing pornographic content too.

American president Donald Trump is also contemplating blocking its download due to the rising tension between the USA and China.

Let’s wait and see how banning these apps will impact TikTok’s user base. Till then, consumers are enjoying the intriguing app while battling coronavirus threats alongside.
