Google Announced A Revised Schedule For Ending The Support Of Chrome Web Store Applications On Windows, Linux, Mac, and Chrome OS

Back in 2016, Google announced that the company will end support for Chrome Web Store applications by the year 2018. However, it did not happen, and the company earlier this year committed to a timeline to slowly end support for these Chrome applications. Now, Google has recently announced a revised schedule and extended the end-of-life dates on all platforms including Mac, Windows, Chrome OS, and Linux. In a recent post on the Chromium blog, Anthony Laforge, Technical Director, Chrome Platform Team, explained that this announcement was made because of the significant progress of the modern Web.

In December of 2017, it was reported that Google was planning to replace Chrome Applications with PWAs. The company did not follow the plan to completely remove Chrome Applications Support on Mac, Windows, and Linux by the first quarter of 2018, and chose to wait until more Desktop Progressive Web Apps became available to install on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Back in March of this year, the Chrome Web Store stopped accepting public Chrome Applications. App developers will be able to update existing Chrome Web Store Applications through June of the year 2022.

The company has adjusted the timeline by letting enterprise admins continue submitting new private and unlisted applications until the Chrome OS support is entirely depreciated in June of the year 2022. Although Chrome Web Store Applications were slated to die this year, the company has extended the deadline to June of next year. Furthermore, organizations can also choose to extend support on Windows, Linux, and Mac to June of the year 2022.

The company also announced in the blog post that general support for Chrome Web Store Applications on Chrome OS will remain enabled through June of the year 2022. You may also note that this change will not affect support for Chrome Extensions. According to the blog post, the company will continue to support as well as invest in Chrome Extensions on all existing platforms including Linux, Mac, and Windows.

You can visit the Chrome Apps migrations page for additional support with Chrome Web Store App migration. By June of the year 2022, Chrome Web Store will no longer accept all Chrome applications, and Chrome Applications support will be ended for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS.
