Google offers additional search and browser options for Europe-based Android users

This week Google on announced how it plans to give its European users enhanced search app and browser options. The move was taken in order to comply with the anti-trust ruling against Google by the European Commission.

Back in July 2018, the European Commission fined Google with a whopping €4.34 billion for its restrictions on Android device makers and network operators.

Google appealed the fine in October but after a week, announced its decision to comply with the ruling. In March, the company announced increased options for Android users in Europe.

The company’s product management director Paul Gennai explained in a press release that the upgraded features for the European Android users will start rolling out in the next few weeks. The updated Android devices will pop up two screens for the European users in which one will give them five options for search apps and the other with five options for browsers.

The list will include the search apps and browsers already installed by the users while those that are not installed on the device will be shown in a random manner based on their popularity. The new screens will pop up for both – new and existing Android phone users in Europe.

In the case when the user chooses to download the recommended search app or browser, Google will assist them in installation and setup. If a user installs a new search app, Google will also ask their choice for the default search engine the next time they open Chrome.
"These changes are being made in response to feedback from the European Commission. We will be evolving the implementation over time.", explained Gennai.
Despite Google’s attempts at making peace with the European Commission, the company received yet another fine for €1.49 billion for signing contracts with third-party websites that lock out rivals from placing search ads on these sites.
