Before the update, some SEO professionals have been using article directories, along with communicating with people through IM's, to build backlinks, whereas after Penguin 2.1, link removal requests to these sites have increased, and about half of them resorted to using Google's disavow tool. Anchor text profiling, on the other hand, has gone from utilizing exact match keyword anchor text links to simply being content with getting links for brand names, just citations or NAP. Link acquisition has changed from getting links from websites having high PR to getting links from sites sharing their niche.
In content marketing, the practice of publishing the same article across many directories and link wheels were used, but because of content duplication issue, there existed a need for creating sharing quality content like guest blogging in high-quality sites, infographics, using social media sites for relevant content sharing, and business blogging. Social media marketing, in particular, had transformed from just sharing information to gathering actual customers through posting relevant content and directly engaging with them. The update also affected how online entrepreneurs deal with their customers. The correspondence with customers not just ends with getting testimonials but keep engaging with them by responding to customer's feedback, rating and recommendations.
This infographic should reflect the new meta in developing effective SEO campaigns for experts to avoid misalignments with their outlook on getting results and actually achieving success from their efforts.
