Mobile app intelligence firm Apptopia reported on July 7, 2026, that 86% of U.S. generative AI chatbot users in Q2 2026 regularly used one chatbot app, while 11% actively used two and 3% used three or more. The findings are based on users who opened an app at least five times within a month, rather than people who only tried an app once or twice.
Apptopia also examined how downloading a competing chatbot affected use of an existing app. The company analyzed ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok users who downloaded competing chatbot apps, comparing average time spent per daily active user during the 30 days before and after the new app was downloaded.
In all but one case, users continued using the newly downloaded chatbot and spent more time with their existing app. The exception was ChatGPT users who downloaded Claude, whose average time spent in ChatGPT fell by 13.5% over the following 30 days. Over those 30 days, ChatGPT users spent an average of 24.9 minutes per day using the app, while Claude users averaged 26.1 minutes. Apptopia also said Claude's usage appeared more volatile among the users included in its analysis.
