Data released by Appfigures and Apptopia shows that artificial intelligence apps increased their presence in global download rankings in April 2026, while user activity data reflected both growth and decline across different measures.
According to Appfigures, three AI assistants, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, appeared in the combined top 10 most downloaded apps worldwide across the App Store and Google Play. ChatGPT ranked first with an estimated 53 million downloads, followed by TikTok and Instagram. Gemini placed within the top five, while Claude entered the list at ninth.
Appfigures reported that the top 10 apps recorded 307 million downloads in April, down from 327 million in March. The change reflects a difference in which apps appeared in the rankings, with multiple AI apps joining a list typically led by social and messaging platforms. On Apple’s App Store, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude ranked as the three most downloaded apps.

Separate data from Apptopia, focused on the United States, provides additional context on usage. Daily active users of generative AI chatbot apps declined by 1.5 percent in April compared with March, though activity remained 3.8 percent higher than in February. Over the same period, Gemini’s market share remained at roughly 25 percent, while ChatGPT’s share declined from 45.3 percent in January to 38.1 percent in April. "Claude has moved from a market share of 1.5% in January 2026 to a share of 13.1% in April.".
Apptopia's mobile app data reported differences in engagement across user groups. High-frequency users increased from 6.8 percent to 8.5 percent of the user base between December 2025 and April 2026, with about 68 percent remaining at that level in the following month. Lower-frequency users showed declining retention, with around half discontinuing use each month. The data also indicates that approximately 24 to 25 percent of users who had stopped using AI apps returned in subsequent months, mostly at lower usage levels.
Revenue data from Appfigures shows a separate pattern. TikTok remained the highest-earning app globally in April with an estimated $303 million in net revenue, followed by ChatGPT at $211 million. The top 10 apps generated a combined $1.3 billion in net revenue, down from $1.5 billion in March.
Taken together, the data shows that AI apps gained positions in global download rankings in April, while user activity and retention varied across different segments and measures.
