DuckDuckGo Adds Option to Filter AI-Generated Images

DuckDuckGo has introduced a setting that filters out AI-generated images from its search results. It's a direct response to complaints that synthetic media often crowds out real content, especially in image searches.

Users can toggle the option by running a search, clicking the Images tab, and adjusting the “AI images” dropdown. A “hide” option blocks most synthetic results from view. There’s also a dedicated version of the site at noai.duckduckgo.com, where the filter stays active and additional AI elements, including summaries and chat, are disabled.

How It Works: The filter uses public blocklists maintained by developers of uBlock Origin and uBlacklist. These include a stricter “nuclear” list that flags domains known for hosting AI-generated media. DuckDuckGo noted the tool doesn’t remove every single instance but helps reduce the presence of AI images overall.

Real Concerns Behind the Move: Some image searches, like the term “baby peacock”, have drawn user backlash after turning up more synthetic visuals than authentic ones. The results created confusion around what was real and what wasn’t. Complaints appeared across Reddit, Medium, and other platforms, prompting new scrutiny over how search engines manage AI-created content.

Others Moving in the Same Direction: This is not the only attempt to limit generative material. Hiya launched a Chrome extension last year to flag AI-created voice clips on platforms like YouTube and Facebook. Microsoft also worked with a nonprofit to remove deepfake nudes from Bing’s image results.

More Filters on the Way: DuckDuckGo confirmed plans to expand its filtering system, though details haven’t been announced. For now, the new toggle offers users a way to trim out AI-generated visuals without changing how they browse.
