Popular texting platform WhatsApp just celebrated another milestone that was unveiled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg during an earnings call on Wednesday.
This included the app hitting the 3 billion MAU milestone during Q1, which is huge news considering it’s offered free of cost and without any ads. The company was first founded in the year 2009, and since then, it was acquired by Facebook for a whopping $19 billion in 2014. It remained free for all for years, and today, it’s adored by a huge chunk of the global population.
"The third opportunity is business messaging. Right now the vast majority of our business is advertising in feeds on Facebook and Instagram. But WhatsApp now has more than 3 billion monthly actives, with more than 100 million people in the US and growing quickly there. Messenger is also used by more than a billion people each month, and there are now as many messages sent each day on Instagram as there are on Messenger. Business messaging should be the next pillar of our business.", said Meta's CEO in First Quarter 2025 Results Conference Call.
In 2020, the figure was 2 billion MAU, but the latest milestone makes it one of the few firms to enter this domain. Of course, Facebook is also a part of the success for Meta, which celebrated the 3 billion monthly user mark a while back.
The huge user base makes this company a crucial business for tech giant Meta, especially because now as its strategy of success is now relying more on AI. During one of the previous keynote speeches, it shared how the app is one of the largest platforms offering AI services. So many users engage with Meta AI across the globe. Meanwhile, WhatsApp was highlighted as having one of the strongest AI usage and presence across the tech giant’s family of platforms.
Many users are now turning to Meta AI for one-on-one chats. While WhatsApp provides the easiest route to AI features, Meta needs to take different strategies to ensure the adoption of different AI goods and services in places like the US. The latter is where most people prefer using phone messaging apps for texting. And here is where the newly rolled out Meta AI app comes into action.
Meta shared how they hope to be the true leader over time regarding US messaging, but they are now in a different position altogether when they look at the global market. So for now, Meta AI is going to be very crucial for the US market to mark its leadership as the main AI for personal use. They hope to keep advancing on this front in different domains.
The company shared how WhatsApp’s business platform continues to grow as we speak. It made up for a huge part of the $510M produced in revenue that’s brought in by the family of apps.
So far, the company continues to test various AI tools for its Business domain. The company is working to design a new AI Agent interface with a dashboard. This lets businesses train Meta AI on their personal data. This could be linked to a firm’s website, their profile across WhatsApp, or even accounts on Facebook or Instagram. Similarly, they are testing the action of giving businesses the chance to activate the AI chatbot by Meta through chats with potential clients.
