One in Five Local Searches Skip Google Search, Go Straight to Maps for Business Info and Directions

BrightLocal did a new Consumer Search Behavior study and found that 20% of the local searches start from map and navigation apps on Android and iOS. One in five local businesses is found through map apps instead of traditional search. The study also found that 15% of the consumers go to Google Maps if they need to find a local business, which hints that marketers should also start applying their SEO strategies to maps. On the other hand, 45% of the consumers search local businesses on Google Search.

This shows that many consumers are now preferring searches for local businesses that provide them with location, as well as visuals and maps are the perfect place for this. The research also found that there is a generational difference in who is searching for businesses on maps and who is not. 18% of Gen-Z are using Google Maps to search local places, while 21% of millennials are using the platform for their searches. On the other hand, 5% of millennials are also using Apple Maps to search for businesses locally.

When consumers were asked what they look for in map results when they are searching for local businesses, 85% said they want to know about the contact information of the businesses as well as their opening hours. 49% also said that they plan their bus routes after they have searched for a local business on a maps app, which suggests that consumers are quick in making decisions.
