A survey of 1,391 parents and teens in the US by Pew showed that many teens have started thinking of social media as harmful and time-consuming. Many lawmakers and regulators are also trying to protect young users from the harmful effects of social media and asking online platforms to make them safe for younger audiences. The report by Pew shows how there is a change in how teens are perceiving social media and its impact on their mental health.
According to the report, 48% of the teens say that social media is mostly affecting people their age negatively, which is a big increase from 2022. Only 11% of the teens who were surveyed said that social media has a positive effect on people their age, while 24% said so in 2022. Interestingly, only a small number of teens thought of social media as harmful for themselves, with only 14% saying that social media impacts them negatively. The report by Pew didn't focus on why this difference is present, but there have been a lot of conversations happening about the effect of social media on the mental health of teens.
The report also found that 45% of teens are aware that they spend a lot of time on social media, while 27% said so in 2022. 45% also said that social media affects their sleep negatively, while 40% think that it also affects their productivity. 44% of the teens also reported that they have started using social media and their smartphones less, which shows how teens' perspectives are changing.
