A top online safety organization is sharing with the world its annual report and how there’s an alarming rise in online pages hosting child abuse images.
The report comes from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which says the figures have now hit a record high level. The IWF, which was first built to remove abusive images, has received so many reports on this front. And the alarming part is how thousands are linked to those below the age of 18.
The cases are currently very high and are being driven due to threats like AI-based abusive content, malicious posts of naked people, and sextortion. The fact that they are mostly linked to those below the age of 18 is alarming, they concluded.
The annual report says that a lot of these can impact the safety of children online and give rise to a serious crisis that requires intervention before it’s too late. In reply to the matter, it’s now said to be designing a new method that smaller websites can use to detect and stop the spread of such abusive content through their pages.
This tool was called Image Intercept, and it can block any such questionable image inside the database of nearly 2.8 million, which was produced digitally and marked as criminal pictures. It also hopes ot provide new kinds of 24-hour protections that assist smaller companies comply with the Online Safety Act.
This first came into play last month and forces platforms to follow certain codes of practice rolled out by Ofcom so that users are safe online. As per the CEO of IWF, so many youngsters are at risk and facing serious online threats, where they risk getting exploited sexually. And in today’s day and age, some content spreads online like wildfire.
To make matters worse, AI isn’t helping the situation. It’s actually worsening things as so many responsible platforms don’t have the necessary resources to keep users protected on their pages against those carrying out such evil actions against kids.
This is why they’re now stepping in to assist operators in making the online space safe again and free from harsh content. This way, they can then identify the true criminals behind this event so justice is served.
