Instagram to Launch Community Chats with 250 Members and Original Image Aspect Ratio Support

Instagram is working on a new community chat feature that’s similar to Discord.

The latest offering will give users the chance to organize groups featuring up to 250 people. So far, it’s not released yet but thanks to social media expert and developer Alessandro Paluzzi, we can confirm that exciting things are in the pipeline.

Screenshots shows how the community chats will work similar to Discord. Individuals can create chats related to specific topics and have full control over anyone that wishes to join. But the limit stands at 250 members from the community for now.

It’s going to be different from the app’s usual broadcast channels that give creators the chance to share messages to followers and anyone in the chat can take part in the conversation. You will also find some in-built moderation features. Admins get the chance to delete texts and members can work towards keeping channels safe. All chats would be reviewed to see that they fit into the app’s Community Guidelines.

For now, it’s not clear when we can anticipate a launch, but as per the app’s spokesperson, it’s not getting tested outside the firm. We’ve seen Meta rollout similar features on other apps before. We saw WhatsApp experiment with Communities in 2022 and even add Community Chats to Facebook as well as the Messenger app in the same year. As per Zuckerberg, the goal was to assist people in finding a greater connection with those having similar interests as them.

In other news, the app is launching the ability for more users to share images featuring the original aspect ratio, as spotted by Jonahmanzano. They are slowly getting alerts about ‘Get the Full Picture’ that is an update on a previous version of the feature that was restricted to a limited number of users.

Now, whenever a user chooses to upload several images as a carousel, they can use the automated feature for cropping to Square and Portrait with the same aspect ratio. Now if the images have different aspect ratios, you get a new mixed option that enables the picture to retain the actual dimensions.

During this publishing workflow, users get the chance to preview every image in their actual aspect ratio. When it’s published, the landscape pictures will feature borders around them to maintain the original layout.

This latest update provides creators as well as brands the chance to attain more flexibility in terms of mixing and matching image ratios inside one carousel. In the past, when you published a carousel with images of different ratios, users had to choose one, and that meant undesirable cropping.

This will be very helpful for photographers who wish for their pictures to be displayed in the original dimension and framing. But similar to the replies seen to the actual feature, it’s likely to be adored by creators that have been longing for this offering for a long time.
