Tech giant Google is taking action against adblockers and making sure users disable them if they wish to see a video running smoothly on YouTube.
The company is cracking down on users that have adblockers active, clearly outlining how that is against YouTube’s Terms of Service. It’s similarly discouraging users from enabling them if they haven’t or switching to Premium if they’re sick of ads.
The latest popup banner also highlights the company’s efforts related to server-side ads making the process of blocking even more difficult. As shared before, the saga is not something shocking or new. We saw accusations relating back to the year 2023 when Google was accused of purposefully slowing down the app on browsers like Firefox. At the time, the Android maker denied the claims.
Now, months later, it’s come out with this explanation. At that time, it was saved as Adblock mentioned that it was their fault at that time. We also saw some allegations that the company was hiding the famous skip ad feature but again, the tech giant said it was innocent.
Google shared how ad blockers go against the video streaming app’s Terms of Service. When it might seem like you’re using an ad blocker, the app’s video playback feature stops. This is unless and until the user disables ad blockers.
The company further mentioned how ads help the app be used for free by users around the globe. But if you’re so keen on ridding ads, you can opt for YouTube Premium. Creators will still get a chance to receive payments through this subscription, it explained.
Clearly, this nagging banner is not going anywhere soon. Opera browsers reported it today and we aren’t very sure if it’s popping up in other parts of the world as well or just linked to south-east Asia at the moment.
So far, there are so many complaints about it popping up across the OperaGX subreddit as well as through YouTube’s subreddit. The same goes for Firefox where users are compiling about the same banner popping up and videos getting paused.
As far as Chrome is concerned, videos tend to play so much slower. The performance is very sluggish and upsetting. Clearly, adblockers are here to stay and they’re being impacted by various issues as the Android maker keeps trying to make the app’s adblocking activity very hard to work around.
