Microsoft Leaves Users Vulnerable by Removing VPN Protection Layer for Defender

In the past, we saw software giant Microsoft get more innovative when it came down to its security. The company added an innovative VPN layer for Defender that kept users safe from any risks arising from unsafe internet connections.

The feature was first up for grabs on Android but then it was expanded to include other platforms. Privacy protection like this gives rise to VPN connections between various devices and servers belonging to the software giant. It similarly disguises IP addresses with traffic encryption keeping users protected from unsafe networks.

From the start, it was restricted to just 50GB in terms of monthly traffic offers. This excluded the high bandwidth features like streaming of using social media. The feature happened to be a part of Microsoft 365 that has more than 82M consumer subscribers by 2024’s end.

The VPN inside Defender is now no longer going to be present as the company shared the deadline for removal as the last day of this month through a recent blog post. In terms of defending the move, it added how it keeps on evaluating different features’ usage with time and how efficient they are at a task. In this case, the tech giant feels it might need to ditch VPN for Defender and invest in better areas to align with client needs.

Privacy protection is up for grabs inside Microsoft Defender for those having Microsoft 365 in America, the United Kingdom, and Canada. There’s a support page that didn’t feature the updated announcement as it still says to provide support for more countries.

Microsoft did reassure worried users that Defender was still doing its job and keeping data and devices safe at all times. It was similarly limiting incidents of identity theft and giving out alerts after threat detection online. So in other words, there’s no difference in its services.

Those using Windows, macOS, and iOS don’t need to make any other changes but those having Defender on Android need to delete the VPN profile from their devices. While leaving it there won’t impact the phone, it’s outlined as a recommendation as it won’t give out any protection. To complete the task, simply go to settings and search for the VPN.

Microsoft explained that if users have selected privacy protection, they will see the Microsoft Defender VPN profile across the list for all VPNs. They can use this information icon for tapping into it and deleting it.

Remember, the company first purchased the Copilot and raised the price of its Microsoft 365 by more than $3 every month. This brought the costs for the Personal plan to $10 and the family plan to $13 every month.
